General Session 120: Skin Conditions in Skin of Color
Room: Chatham C
To provide clinicians with increased knowledge to differentiate skin color classification systems and treatment modalities for common skin disorders in patients with skin of color. For years, there have been gaps in education and training for clinicians to diagnose and treat dermatologic disorders in populations with skin of color. Many clinicians are trained on light complexions and undiagnosed or misdiagnosed on critical and time-sensitive treatment in peopled of skin of color. These disparities are important to address to avoid adverse effects and poor patient outcomes. The presenter will provide case studies for participants that aim to correct the disparities in diverse complexions of skin of color. Studies have revealed that there is a underrepresentation of dermatological conditions in patients with skin of color in textbooks, journals, and educational programs. It is crucial that clinicians should advance the field of dermatology but do so as a more inclusive and diverse specialty to provide the highest quality of care to all patients of color.
